Why Doesn't Four Seasons Have a Loyalty Program?

If you've ever stayed at a Four Seasons, you've probably wondered why one of the world's best luxury hotel brands doesn't have a loyalty program.

There are no points to collect, no elite status to earn and no free nights to redeem.

At first glance, that sounds like a disadvantage. In reality, I think Four Seasons has taken a much smarter approach. Instead of rewarding guests with points, it focuses on two things: exceptional guest recognition and the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program. Together, they deliver benefits that, in my opinion, are often worth far more than a traditional loyalty program.

Does Four Seasons Have a Loyalty Program?

The simple answer is no.

Unlike Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors or World of Hyatt, Four Seasons does not operate a points-based rewards program. Guests cannot collect points towards free nights or work their way through published status levels.

Instead, Four Seasons has invested heavily in its guest recognition system.

Every stay helps build a profile of your preferences. This can include room requests, dietary preferences, special occasions, favourite drinks and many other details that help make future stays more personal.

I experienced this myself after mentioning to a member of staff during one stay that I didn't like avocado. It wasn't a formal request and I certainly didn't ask for it to be recorded.

Months later, I checked into a Four Seasons on the other side of the world. During breakfast, a member of staff mentioned that they understood I didn't like avocado and asked if I would prefer it left off my meal.

That moment genuinely surprised me.

It wasn't the fact they remembered. It was that a casual conversation at one hotel had followed me across the Four Seasons portfolio.

For me, that's a far more impressive demonstration of loyalty than watching a points balance increase.

Four Seasons Preferred Partner Is Better Than Most Loyalty Programs

This is where I think Four Seasons has a significant advantage.

Rather than asking guests to stay dozens of nights before earning worthwhile benefits, Four Seasons offers the Preferred Partner program through selected luxury travel advisors.

Every Four Seasons hotel and resort participates.

Even better, Preferred Partner benefits apply to virtually every publicly available room rate, including advance purchase rates that are prepaid and non-refundable. Very few luxury hotel programs are as generous.

Benefits typically include:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • A hotel credit, often worth US$100 per stay
  • Room upgrade, subject to availability
  • Early check-in, subject to availability
  • Late checkout, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Depending on the hotel, these benefits can easily be worth several hundred dollars.

On longer stays, expensive suites, villas or Private Retreats, the value can reach into the thousands.

Most importantly, you receive these benefits from your very first stay. There is no requirement to earn elite status first.

What About Free Nights?

One of the biggest attractions of traditional loyalty programs is earning free nights.

The interesting thing is that Four Seasons regularly offers complimentary night promotions anyway.

Across the portfolio, it is very common to see offers such as Stay 3, Pay 2, Stay 4, Pay 3 or even Stay 5, Pay 4.

Unlike a points redemption, these promotions are available immediately when offered. When combined with Preferred Partner benefits, guests can receive complimentary nights, daily breakfast, hotel credit and upgrade priority all within the same booking.

For many travelers, that represents better value than spending years collecting points.

Why I Think This Approach Works

I like the direction Four Seasons has taken because I think it creates a different type of guest community.

In my experience, people stay at Four Seasons because they genuinely want to stay there. They appreciate exceptional hotels, outstanding service and the overall experience.

They aren't choosing the hotel simply because they have accumulated enough points for a free stay.

I think that helps shape the atmosphere at a Four Seasons. Guests have consciously chosen the hotel because they believe it offers one of the best luxury experiences in the destination.

That feels very different from a hotel where a large percentage of guests are there primarily because it was the best redemption available.

My Opinion

Could Four Seasons introduce a loyalty program? Of course, and I am sure plenty of guests would sign up. I just do not think the brand needs one. Its guest recognition system, complimentary night offers and Preferred Partner benefits already provide many of the advantages people look for in a loyalty program, without requiring them to collect points or work through status tiers.

The avocado story explains the Four Seasons approach better than any membership program could. I was not rewarded with points. The hotel remembered something I had mentioned in passing and used it to make a later stay more personal. For me, that has far more value than another points balance sitting in an account.
