If you are planning a Rosewood stay, there are two primary ways to unlock VIP perks: Rosewood Elite or American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR).
On paper, they look nearly identical. Both include daily breakfast, property credits, room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout. But behind the front desk, hotels treat these two booking channels very differently.

Program Comparison at a Glance
1. The Upgrade Pecking Order
Both programs state that room upgrades are "subject to availability upon arrival."
Behind the scenes, hotels follow a strict priority list: Rosewood Elite bookings are upgraded first.
Because Elite is Rosewood’s own in-house partner program, the property's revenue director and front-office teams prioritize Elite guests over third-party channels. If a resort has three ocean-view suites open and ten guests checking in with perks, the Elite guests get them ahead of Amex FHR and Virtuoso bookings.
Even better, Rosewood regularly runs Elite-exclusive promotions where your one-category room upgrade is confirmed at the time of booking. We see this often at properties like Rosewood Mayakoba, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, and Hôtel de Crillon. In several properties across Europe and Asia (such as Vienna and Bangkok), these confirmed promotions even allow you to book a top-tier room and confirm an upgrade directly into a suite.

2. The Rate Advantage: Can Rosewood Elite Be Cheaper?
Most travelers assume preferred partner programs only apply to the most expensive flexible rates.
- Amex FHR: Almost always locked to the standard Best Available Flexible Rate. You cannot attach FHR perks to promotional specials or advance purchase discounts.
- Rosewood Elite: Perks can frequently be stacked with hotel package offers, seasonal free nights (Stay 4, Pay 3), and select advance purchase promotions.
Because of this flexibility, booking through Rosewood Elite can often secure a lower net nightly rate than Amex FHR while delivering superior perks.
3. Breakfast: In-Room Dining vs. Restaurant Only
This is one of the most practical everyday advantages of Rosewood Elite:
- Rosewood Elite: Breakfast benefits generally extend to in-room dining. You can order a full breakfast spread delivered directly to your private terrace, plunge pool, or suite living room without extra charges on your final bill.
- Amex FHR: Breakfast credits are usually strictly tied to the hotel’s main buffet or restaurant. If you order room service on an FHR booking, it almost always appears on your folio at checkout.
4. Hotel Credits: Higher Amounts and Real Flexibility
Amex FHR caps its credit at a flat $100 per stay, whether you book an entry-level room for two nights or a multi-bedroom villa for two weeks.
Rosewood Elite credits are negotiated property-by-property, routinely offering higher amounts and scaling on larger accommodations:
- Rosewood Mayakoba: $125 resort credit. Covers dinner and mezcal tastings at Casa del Lago or Agave Azul, signature treatments at Sense Spa, or boat fuel for a lagoon eco-tour.
- Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort: $150 credit per bedroom. An oceanfront two-bedroom hale receives $300, while a four-bedroom residence receives $600. That easily covers poolside dining at Shipwreck Bar, dinner at Moana, cabana rentals, or Asaya Spa therapies.
- Rosewood Miramar Beach (Montecito): $125 resort credit applied toward beachfront cocktails, dinner at Caruso’s, or spa services.
- Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco (Tuscany): €100+ credit toward private Brunello di Montalcino wine tastings, estate truffle hunting excursions, or dining at the Michelin-starred Campo del Drago.
- Hôtel de Crillon (Paris): €100 credit toward drinks at Bar Les Ambassadeurs or afternoon tea in the Jardin d'Hiver.
Where credits apply: In both programs, credits apply to on-property incidentals (dining, bars, spa, resort-run activities). They cannot be applied toward the base room rate, service charges, local taxes, or independent third-party gift boutiques.
5. What About That 4:00 PM Checkout?
Amex heavily promotes its guaranteed 4:00 PM checkout as a headline perk. In practice, especially at luxury resorts, this is rarely the deciding factor:
- Direct management advocacy: Because Rosewood Elite advisors work directly with on-property management, late checkouts (typically 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) are prioritized and cleared ahead of arrival whenever occupancy permits.
- Full resort access: At properties like Mayakoba, Kona Village, or Little Dix Bay, handing in your room key does not mean leaving the resort. Rosewood provides hospitality lounges, spa changing facilities, and luggage storage. You retain full access to the beach clubs, pools, and restaurants right up until your airport transfer departs.
- Unless you have an evening red-eye flight and plan to spend the entire afternoon sitting inside your room, the 4:00 PM cutoff rarely outweighs being lower on the upgrade list every single night of your stay.
6. Service: Dedicated Advisor vs. Call Center
What happens if your flight is delayed or your plans change?
- With Amex FHR: You have to call a general 1-800 Amex Travel call center, wait on hold, and speak with an agent who has never set foot on the property.
- With Rosewood Elite: You message us. We contact the hotel's Director of Rooms or General Manager directly via email or phone to protect your room, arrange late arrivals, and ensure your preferences are handled.
7. The Amex Platinum Hotel Statement Credit
If you hold a U.S. Amex Platinum Card with an unused semi-annual hotel statement credit (up to $300), you must prepay through Amex Travel to trigger it. If saving that cash out of pocket is your top priority for a short one-night city stopover, FHR makes sense. For longer resort stays, the higher Elite credits, in-room dining, and superior upgrade priority frequently outweigh the card rebate.
Which Should You Book?
- Book Rosewood Elite when: You want top priority on the hotel’s upgrade list, prefer having breakfast delivered to your room or terrace, are booking a multi-bedroom villa or suite, want a higher resort credit ($125 to $150+), want to book promotional rates, or want direct pre-arrival advocacy from hotel management.
- Book Amex FHR when: You have an evening departure and must remain inside your physical room until 4:00 PM, or you specifically need to use an expiring $300 Amex Platinum prepaid credit.
