Amanvari Baja California Sur: A First Look at Aman’s Mexico Debut

August 3, 2026

Amanvari has officially opened on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, marking Aman’s long-awaited debut in Mexico. It sits at the far north end of the 1,500-acre Costa Palmas development with just 18 standalone casitas. That ultra-small footprint instantly sets it apart from pretty much every other high-end hotel in Los Cabos.

When I first looked at the launch photos and rates, I was skeptical. The entry-level casitas face the protected inland estuary rather than directly over the Sea of Cortez, yet night rates start around $6,000. Right next door, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas often offers sea-view rooms for a fraction of that price.

That is a hard price gap to ignore. But Amanvari and Four Seasons are selling entirely different experiences.

Four Seasons is a much larger, polished, high-energy resort with a lot of families, multiple restaurants, and direct access to the marina. Amanvari is tiny, quiet, and hyper-focused on privacy and tuning out.

That level of quiet is really what you are paying for, and I speak from personal experience here. Last December, I was completely burnt out, glued to my phone, and suffering from heavy fatigue. A stay at Amanemu in Japan, which operates with a very similar quiet ethos to Amanvari, completely reset and healed me. At a small property like this, you rarely run into other guests. You do not deal with crowded breakfasts, fight over pool chairs, or listen to resort chatter. The service feels genuine and personal simply because the team is looking after a small handful of people rather than hundreds.

At Aman, value has never been about raw room size or a direct oceanfront terrace. It is about how calm you feel after a day or two. Paying $6,000 a night for an estuary view is still an eye-watering figure, and Amanvari needs to deliver flawless food and service to justify it. But the positioning makes a lot more sense once you stop treating it as a room-for-room alternative to Four Seasons.

Getting There: An Easy 45 Minute Drive

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is just a 45 minute drive from the resort. Rather than sitting in the traffic around Cabo San Lucas, you'll head northeast through open desert on a modern, well-maintained highway before arriving at Costa Palmas.

Having driven the route myself, I was impressed by how good the road is. It is wide, fully paved and refreshingly free of the potholes and endless topes that you often encounter elsewhere in Mexico. It is a relaxed drive that sets the tone for the rest of your stay.

For guests traveling from the United States, getting to Los Cabos is straightforward. The airport has nonstop flights from more than 25 U.S. cities, with excellent service from major hubs including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Denver, Chicago, New York, Seattle and Salt Lake City. Airlines serving the route include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue, making it one of the easiest luxury beach destinations in Mexico to reach without a connection.

Approximate nonstop flight times are:

  • Los Angeles: 2 hours
  • Phoenix: 2 hours
  • San Francisco: 2.5 hours
  • Dallas-Fort Worth: 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Denver: 2.5 hours
  • Houston: 2.5 hours
  • Chicago: 4 hours
  • New York: 5.5 to 6 hours

UCompared to many Aman resorts around the world, Amanvari is refreshingly easy to reach. Many Aman properties require an additional seaplane, domestic flight, boat transfer or long mountain drive after you land. Here, you'll simply collect your luggage, get in a car and be at the resort in under an hour. If you're looking for an Aman that delivers the brand's signature sense of escape without a complicated journey, Amanvari is one of the easiest to access.

The East Cape & Costa Palmas Setting

The location itself is excellent. This part of Baja California Sur feels totally separate from the busy hotel strip in Cabo San Lucas. The coastline is wide open, the sand is soft, and most importantly, the water along the Sea of Cortez is calm and swimmable. That is a massive deal for Los Cabos, where the vast majority of luxury resorts sit on dangerous beaches where you cannot set foot in the water.

Amanvari sits way down on the quiet north end of Costa Palmas, well away from the Four Seasons and the busier marina village area. That positioning gives you the best of both worlds. You get the isolation of an 18-room hideaway, but you still have access to the master development's shared amenities. That includes an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones II golf course, the deep-water marina, and several beach clubs. You can easily spend the morning playing golf or grabbing lunch at the marina, then head back to a completely silent resort.

The Casitas and Resort Layout

The resort is laid out as 18 elevated, pavilion-style casitas scattered across the landscape. Every room features floor-to-ceiling glass, private plunge pools, and large indoor-outdoor living spaces. Views vary depending on the category, facing either the estuary, the surrounding desert, or directly out to the Sea of Cortez.

The overall pace here is deliberately slow. Days are meant to revolve around breakfast overlooking the coast, lounging by your private pool, long walks on the beach, and unhurried dinners beneath the stars.

Food & Beverage: On-Property Dining and Costa Palmas

For an 18-room property, the dining options are surprisingly well thought out. Sourcing high-end ingredients in remote Baja can be tricky, but Amanvari draws heavily from Costa Palmas' 18-acre organic farm alongside fresh daily catches straight from the Sea of Cortez.

On property, you have four distinct choices:

  • Arva: Aman’s signature Italian concept, serving simple, elevated dishes focused on fresh regional produce.
  • Sensui: An intimate Japanese venue featuring a ten-seat omakase counter alongside an à la carte sushi menu.
  • Luma: Centered on coastal Mexican cooking, preparing local dishes over an open fire.
  • Nura & The Lounge: Nura offers relaxed, beachfront dining right on the sand, while the Lounge serves as a chill spot for daytime drinks.

If you want more variety during a longer stay, a quick golf cart ride brings you to the rest of Costa Palmas. That gives you easy access to partner restaurants like Estiatorio Milos for Greek seafood, Mozza Baja by Nancy Silverton, and Delphine by Michelin-star chef Ludo Lefebvre.

Wellness: The Aman Spa

Wellness is central to the stay here, and the spa is set up as its own sanctuary between the desert landscape and the estuary. Rather than feeling boxed in like many hotel spas, the space is open and airy.

The setup includes six large treatment suites using local Baja botanicals, along with two dedicated Hydro Houses equipped with a Russian banya, Turkish hammam, steam facilities, and cold plunges. There is also an open-air yoga pavilion positioned for sunrise practice, a 24-hour fitness center, and a traditional Mexican temazcal guided by a local shaman for deep detoxification.
